School ‘Booknic’ events hosted by Meadowhall to inspire local children to read

More than 320 school children across four schools in Sheffield have taken part in a celebratory ‘booknic’ event organised by Meadowhall in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

The ‘booknic’ involved children enjoying a picnic and a book while also taking part in a range of fun reading-themed activities.

Schoolchildren from Hatfield Academy, Ferham Primary School, Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy and Beck Primary School took part in the event, with each child also able to take a book of their choice home.

The ‘booknic’ was part of the Young Readers Programme, an award-winning initiative sponsored by Meadowhall’s co-owner British Land and run in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, designed to encourage children to read outside of the classroom.

The initiative also gave the schools access to virtual interactive storytelling sessions and a literary quiz.

British Land and the National Literacy Trust celebrates its 10th year in partnership this year. Since the programme launched in Meadowhall, it has supported more than 2,400 schoolchildren and seen more than 7,200 books donated across the city.

Research from the National Literacy Trust shows that children who own their own books are six times more likely to read above the level expected for their age and three times more likely to enjoy reading.1

Over the past year Meadowhall has also gifted 850 books to local food banks, charities and community organisations to help provide children in under privileged areas access to books during the pandemic.

Darren Pearce, centre director at Meadowhall, said: “Supporting our community is so important to us and the Young Readers Programme plays a massive part in that. It’s a brilliant initiative which we look forward to every year and it’s great to see the children celebrating at our booknic event.

“Thanks also needs to go to the National Literacy Trust for their hard work on this event and over the years. They’ve helped us to ensure that the additional support and books go to those who need them most.”

Jonathan Douglas CBE, Chief Executive of the National Literacy Trust, said: “Encouraging children to develop a love of reading from a young age can have a tangible impact on their literacy skills, mental wellbeing and futures. Yet hundreds of thousands of children across the UK are missing out on these benefits simply because they don’t have a book of their own to read at home.

“The Young Readers Programme, with support from British Land, tackles this and we’d like to thank them for all their support over the years.”

Meadowhall Joins The Great British Spring Clean

Volunteer litter pickers from Meadowhall recently joined the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean in a bid to help tidy up Sheffield.

A team of fifteen volunteers joined forces on 2nd June for a community litter pick, where they collected roughly half a ton of mixed waste and bottles.

In a team effort, Centre Director Darren Pearce and colleagues conquered a stretch of the Trans Pennine Trail, along the Five Wiers Walk cycle path.

The Meadowhall team chose to spruce up the cycle path as part of a bid to get more visitors on their bikes. To encourage this, the center recently installed brand new cycle hubs near the Oasis Dining Quarter and Argos entrances, providing 120 additional secure spaces for visitors to safely leave their bikes.

Darren Pearce, Centre Director at Meadowhall, said: “We’re really proud to be participating in this year’s Great British Spring Clean, joining thousands of people across the UK to clear litter from our streets, parks and benches. It’s been great to help tidy up our local area and to give back to our local community in Sheffield.”

Meadowhall encourages shoppers to get their cycle on for National Bike Week

From 30th May – 5th June, visitors to Meadowhall can pick up a range of free cycling gear donated by the Making South Yorkshire Roads Safer campaign, including waterproof helmet covers, gloves, neck warmers and bag covers.

The giveaways, which can be collected from the centre management suite next to the Oasis Dining Quarter, are part of the centre’s commitment to encourage more visitors to choose environmentally-friendly travel routes to Meadowhall, and support safe and secure cycling in the region.

Meadowhall recently installed brand new cycle hubs near the Oasis Dining Quarter and Argos entrances, providing 120 additional secure spaces for visitors to safely leave their bikes. They also include six e-bike charging points, two bike repair and pump stations, and lockers to store helmets.

The cycle hubs were part-funded by Sheffield City Region and have an environmentally-friendly design that includes a sedum roof to provide food for butterflies, bees and birds in the area.

Darren Pearce, centre director at Meadowhall, said: “We all know cycling is a great way to get around and keep fit, and it’s also a good choice for our environment. We’re committed to helping to support a sustainable future for Yorkshire, and helping our visitors choose a greener form of transport to get to us is one way of doing this.

“In recent years we’ve invested in both the space we have for cyclists through our new racks and hub, as well as the installation of our electrical vehicle charging points in our car parks.”

Stock for the cycle wear giveaways is limited and will be on a first come first serve basis.

Meadowhall to Host the Bears of Sheffield Farewell Event

As one of the key sponsors of the Bears of Sheffield trail, Meadowhall can reveal it will be hosting the ‘farewell event’ for the trail in October.

The Bears of Sheffield is a trail of 61 big bears and 100 little bears which have been dotted around the city for the public to find over the summer. The event has been organised by The Children’s Hospital Charity to help raise money for a new Cancer and Leukaemia Ward at Sheffield Children’s through donations, merchandise and sponsorship.

From Thursday 14 October until Sunday 17 October, all 61 big bears will be together for the last time before they are auctioned off to the highest bidder to raise money for the charity.

The farewell event will give the public the opportunity to get a final look at all the bears they didn’t manage to visit during the trail – which will end on Wednesday 29 September.

Tickets for the event are available to buy online now and will support the overall fundraising total. Prices are £5 for adults, £2 for children (aged 3-15yrs – under 3’s can go free) or £12 for a family (two adults, two children).

As well as being a key sponsor of the city-wide initiative, Meadowhall is also currently home to seven bears on the trail, including Dancing Bear, Flora, Pieces, Ted, Willow, Goldie and Carden Crew. For more information on the bears that can be found in Meadowhall – click here.

Darren Pearce, centre director at Meadowhall, said: “We’re a proud long-standing partner of the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and are pleased to be hosting another farewell event after the success of the Herd of Sheffield back in 2016.  It will be brilliant to have all 61 big bears here with us and to help raise money for such an important cause.”

There is still plenty of time to see the bears in situ on the trail – find out where you can pick up a map here: https://bearsofsheffield.com/trail-map-and-merchandise-s/

Meadowhall Funds Tinsley Children’s Trip to the Seaside

Excited local pupils were treated to an enriching day out at the seaside last week, thanks to a grant from Yorkshire’s no.1 attraction, Meadowhall.

Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils aged between five and nine, from Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy School in Sheffield, visited Whitby to experience the contrasting sights and sounds of the exhilarating Yorkshire coast.

The children dived into a day of learning and play, with visits to the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Whitby Abbey and Whitby Lifeboat Station. The foundation-year pupils will visit the seaside with a trip to Cleethorpes.

Meadowhall has been funding school trips since 2013 – covering the costs of transportation, activities and food. The experiences provide disadvantaged children, who may not leave Sheffield in the summer, with the opportunity to escape the confines of the classroom and learn outdoors in a natural environment.

Darren Pearce, Centre Director for Meadowhall, said: “As a leading supporter of the local community, we’re delighted to be funding the Tinsley Meadows trip to the seaside. It is hugely motivating for the children and allows them to get creative and broaden their horizons.”

Allison Brunt, from Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy School, said: “The children were so excited to be going to the seaside and we’re very grateful to Meadowhall for facilitating another trip for us. The funding allows us to take the curriculum to the beach – and from past experience they really do learn!”

The seaside trips are just one of several projects that Meadowhall has partnered with Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy School for, with the leading leisure destination also having recently invited pupils into the centre to have the ultimate school year picture on a unicorn in The Post Room.

Supporting local learning

We continue to improve local skill and business by offering and supporting top training programmes in the local area.

Apprenticeship Scheme

We have recently added more talented young people to our team – graduates from our successful apprentice scheme.

After successfully completing their apprenticeships, nine went on to secure employment here at Meadowhall in various areas of the business including: Customer Services, the Oasis Dining Quarter, Marketing, Security, Human Resources and Property Services.

Some took it upon themselves to progress their positions by applying for new roles at the centre, against external applicants and graduates. One recent apprentice applied for a role in customer service – he beat nearly 300 applicants to get the job!

Meet your Centre Director

Hi, I’m Darren Pearce, Centre Director at Meadowhall.

I’m proud to have worked here for over 20 years and, in that time, I’ve witnessed Meadowhall become the leisure destination it is today. Popular with shoppers, cinema fans and diners, the centre is a showcase for British Land’s approach to intelligent place-making. It’s a place people prefer, no matter what they enjoy doing.

Community has been at the heart of Meadowhall since its opening 26 years ago. We have played a significant role in the region’s growth, employing up to 8,500 people during peak times, and working to support local projects.

We continue to embrace change, with our biggest ever refurbishment programme presently underway, and plans are in place to introduce a proposed £300 million Leisure Hall set to add a diverse range of dining and entertainment experiences, as well as a state-of-the-art cinema and gym.

I look forward to working alongside our centre and retail teams as we move forward, to ensure Meadowhall continues to be an outstanding place to visit.

Meadowhall’s awards

Meadowhall has been a WorldHost recognised shopping and leisure destination since 2012, a must-have in the world of customer service.

All members of the site cleaning, security and management teams were trained to precise WorldHost standards and to maintain customer service levels, our output is regularly assessed by mystery shoppers. We also conduct regular customer surveys to ensure we’re continually progressing. What’s more, anyone working at Meadowhall who has garnered great feedback on their work is granted a Service Excellence Award.

Sustainability

We’re green too, and have been winning recognition for our environmental programme for more than 20 years, most recently the BCSC Gold Sustainability Award 2014 and British Land’s Managing Buildings Efficiently Award 2015.

We aim to keep serving the community and driving excellence in local talent – to keep up to date with all our goings on, sign up to our newsletter

Meadowhall is green

You know Meadowhall as your favourite place to spend time shopping, eating and relaxing but it’s also one of the country’s key retail players. Let’s look at the facts:

  • Meadowhall is Yorkshire’s premier shopping destination and one of seven super-regional shopping centres in the UK.
  • Our 1.4 million sq ft centre has attracted 560 million visits since opening in 1990.
  • It’s home to 230 stores, 50 places to eat and drink, and an 11-screen cinema.
  • 18% of all business rates collected in Sheffield City Council come from the centre, with 1p of every £1 traced back to Meadowhall.
  • During peak times we employ 8,500 people and 1 in 100 jobs across the City Region is supported by our activities.
  • Meadowhall has its own public transport interchange for bus, train and tram services.
  • The centre offers 12,000 free parking spaces

Meadowhall for all

We want to ensure that Meadowhall is accessible to visitors in a variety of ways.

One approach we’ve taken is to become a Dementia Friendly space. Our staff are fully trained to understand dementia and how it affects people who suffer from it. The Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia, aiming to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.

Another way we are increasing access is through sustainable travel. With £1 million annual public transport investment and a range of green travel initiatives, Meadowhall is the UK’s only major out-of-town shopping centre with its own train, tram and bus interchange.

Meadowhall was an early supporter of electric vehicles, as the first UK shopping centre to install charging points in 2008, in partnership with Sheffield City Council and the Energy Saving Trust. This was followed in 2014 with the installation of South Yorkshire’s first rapid charging points through the ‘Electric Vehicles In Motion!’ scheme. Shoppers are welcoming the chance to charge their vehicles to 80% in just 20-30 minutes.

Through new ideas and training, our Meadowhall team continues to help the community through care and sustainable thinking.
